Guangdong News: A research project of Modern Hospital Guangzhou approved by Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission

Guangdong News: (Reporter/Xu Zhiqiang, Communicator/Zeng Teng) 5th December 2016, the research project from Guangzhou Modern Hospital entitled ‘The efficacy evaluation of Nanoknife with Gemcitabine and Radiotherapy with Gemcitabine on local advanced pancreatic cancer and their safety analysis’ is the first and the foremost research project from Guangzhou Modern Hospital that approved by Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission.

The research project is in charged by the Guangzhou Modern Hospital medical cancer center team, and the project leader-Dr. Huang Deliang, is the senior oncologist of medical cancer center.

Recently, the incidence of pancreatic cancer of the global is on the rise, surgical resection is the most effective treatment for pancreatic cancer, however, there is less than 20% of the patients have the opportunity for surgical resection during the diagnosis. Most cancer patients are in their intermediate or advanced stage during diagnosis, traditional radiotherapy and chemotherapy are less effective and having poor prognosis. Normally, the average life span for them is only 6-8 months, 5-year survival rate is less than 5%. In order to find a reasonable treatment to reduce the pain of patients, extend their lifespan and improve the quality of life for advanced pancreatic cancer patients, the project team began on the assessment and safety analysis of locally advanced pancreatic cancer since last year July. Currently, they have fully equipped with laboratory equipment, research personnel, technology and necessary project research conditions. Dr. Huang Deliang introduces the local ablation through nano-knife combined with chemotherapy, compared and contrast with the current  effective treatment of gemcitabine concurrent radiotherapy method, while undergoing safety assessment in order to apply it more effectively in clinical.

According to Dr. Huang Deliang, there are a lot of local advanced pancreatic cancer’s treatments; internal medical treatment is the most vital treatment. Among them, gemcitabine chemotherapy is widely apply with local treatment, such as radiofrequency ablation, cyrotherapy, reflex seed implantation and local radiotherapy. These techniques are generally small trauma, but the biggest drawback is the lack of selectivity to the destruction of the tissue, which may cause damages to the adjacent tissues and organs at the same time. For those tumors located adjacent to the important tissue, the above treatment may cause serious complications which greatly limit the application of this technique.Nanoknife as a new tumor ablation therapy technology, the mechanism of this therapy is the use of computer-induced cell membrane nano-perforation, leading to apoptosis, because its unique advantages of "selective ablation", meanwhile treating tumors those important structures such as blood vessels, bile duct, pancreatic duct, intestine and nerves is protected. Nanoknife gains attention in the field of minimally invasive treatment of tumor.

Prof. Lin Taijie from Guangzhou Modern Hospital states that Nanoknife is a very advance medical technology, it is very rare that it can be rooted in private hospitals and support by the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, which marks the hospital technology innovation and academic journey to a new milestones, and comprehensively promote the overall standard of scientific research and quality of the hospital
