-The First Sticky Rice Dumplings Wrapping Contest
May 30 marks the day of an annual celebration which is called Dragon Boat Festival. It is when people would gather together and participate in dragon boat racing competition and eat sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. These customs of the Dragon Boat Festival have been handed down by Chinese ancestors. In order to celebrate this traditional festival, St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou helped organize a program to the Lianquan community located at Sha Dong Street with the theme: “A Healthful Celebration of Dragon Boat Festival to the Lianquan Community" which includes a sticky rice dumpling competition.
Lianquan neighborhood leaders took part on the contest by forming 10 teams to participate in the competition. St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, the organizer of this program sent a health doctor to explain to the masses how eating sticky rice dumplings can help on disease prevention and awareness.
According to the rules of the game, the team must complete three kinds of stuffing dumplings (candied dates, peanuts and no stuffing). Dumplings must be medium and uniformed in size. The corners of the triangularly shaped rice dumplings should be tightly fastened. The staff initially prepared already in advance of the ingredients of the rice dumplings which consist of: candied dates, peanuts and soaked glutinous rice neatly placed on the table. The players of each team needs to picked up the dumpling leaves quickly wrap up and mold them into a funnel-like shaped, by put in generous amount of glutinous rice and single-handedly transfer dumplings to the steamer that has already wrapped and tied to a knot. Couple of minutes after the dumplings will then be served to the judges for tasting.
The criteria of judging the rice dumplings is through shape, taste, time of completion and presentation to evaluate which of the following team shall receive the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize.
This competition aims to test your skill on handing delicate dumplings, so community people personally sentiment to the traditional Chinese festival’s connotation and heritage of Chinese outstanding traditional culture that will eventually carry forward the national spirit. At the same time, inviting the community to voluntarily participate in such activities can make everyone feel happy and healthy at the same time, Happy Dragon Boat Festival!
